Le Grand among those recognised in New Year's honours

The author of a damning review of Birmingham's children's services is among more than 100 people, including youth workers, foster carers and social workers, awarded a New Year's honour in recognition of their work with children and young people.

Professor Julian Le Grand, who outlined a series of recommendations in his Ways Forward for Children’s Social Care Services in Birmingham report in March, was awarded a knighthood in recognition of his work to public service.

Meanwhile, John Simmonds, director for policy research and development at the British Association for Adoption and Fostering was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in recognition of his work with children and families.

An adoptive father himself, Simmonds has worked with vulnerable children for more than 40 years and advises the government on issues relating to looked-after children.
