The centre in Melksham and a centre in Calne were both under review by the council as part of a bid to make cuts across the county. The council's deficit of 3.8m was compounded when two local primary care trusts withdrew 3.2m funding for social care services, which will have to be picked up by the council.
David Whewells, head of youth development at Wiltshire County Council, said negotiations were under way to transfer responsibility for costs for the Calne centre from the youth service to Calne Town Council. "We also made an agreement last week with Connexions to take on the Melksham centre and it will be providing 15,000 for this year," he said. "It will use the centre to provide services for young people not in education, employment and training."
