Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Wendy Glasper, volunteer,Sunderland - Actionnaires

1 min read
What do you do? I volunteer for Sunderland Actionnaires and we put on different sports for blind and visually impaired children. I help the children to take part in the sports by letting them use me as guide. I guide those who can't see; they usually grab my arm and run beside me and I tell them whether to go left or right.

What was the highlight of the past month? It's often the smallthings.

We have been doing basketball recently and just showing someone whocan't see how to bounce a ball and to then see them learn to do it isgreat.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? I'm visually impairedmyself and I love sport, so it is good to be able to give something backand these children enjoy sport. Some of them don't get the chance to doPE in school even if they like it and Actionnaires gives them a chanceto take part.

Why did you start working at Actionnaires? A friend and I wanted to dosomething similar in Darlington, but then my friend went to work atAction for Blind People. That's where I heard about Actionnaires and soI got involved.
