Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Tiffany Hughes, musictherapist, the Coram Family Trust

1 min read
What exactly do you do? I am a music therapist working with individual children aged 18 months to 11 years, and parents. I work in a non-directive, child-centred way using a range of instruments and singing to make music and tell stories. The aim is to help children from families with emotional and behavioural difficulties express themselves better.

Describe a typical day? I do up to five, 30-minute sessions a day. Thisis on top of report writing, liaison meetings and email checking.

What other agencies, and who else within your own organisation do youhave to work with? I have meetings with our two on-site nurseries, theCoram Parents Centre and other services such as the adoption and childcontact teams, teachers, social workers and psychotherapists.

How did you end up in the job? After my music degree, I worked alongsidea music therapist in Bosnia for two years. On my return to the UK, I dida post-graduate course in music therapy. Then I freelanced as a musictherapist for two years mainly in schools and rehabilitation settingsbefore joining Coram.
