WORKPLACE: Who's in your meetings? - Lisa Gordon Clark, committee member, British Association of Play Therapists

1 min read
What exactly do you do? I'm a freelance play therapist. Essentially, I help troubled children using play rather than talk as a therapeutic tool. I provide a safe space for children to express, explore and understand their feelings through play, make sense of what's happened in their past, and cope better in their present lives. I also edit the BAPT's weekly newsletter.

Describe a typical day. On average I visit two clients a day in their home, school or family centre, taking heavy boxes of toys with me. Each weekly session lasts an hour and after that I have to deal with the mess, the process notes, the admin and make informal contact with others involved in the child's care. I might also have more formal liaison meetings. The BAPT newsletter also takes many hours - often late into the night.

What other agencies, and who else within your organisation, do you work with? My referrers in social services and private fostering agencies, as well as children's school staff. Plus everyone in the BAPT.
