What is your job? I am responsible for a caseload of 25 to 35 young people who are matched with volunteer mentors. Basically, a young person gets referred to the project through another agency, usually social services. I then go and meet that person to discuss the project and to see if they would like to enrol.

From there on I meet the young person a few times to get a feel for whattheir issues are and to build a relationship with them. I then identifya suitable mentor for that young person from the pool of mentors we haveand match them.

It is then my role to maintain that relationship and ensure the youngperson is getting weekly support, and also to ensure that the mentor issupported in their role.

How did you end up in the job? I started working for the project as anadministration apprentice when I was 17. I eventually got involved inthe youth work side of things and began to volunteer in the youth cluband as a mentor. I also took a youth work qualification. Eventually aposition came up and I got the job.
