WORKPLACE: Who's in your Meetings? - Angela Hyde, outreach worker with Fairbridge de Cymru

1 min read
What exactly do you do? There are thousands of young people who have enormous skills and creativity but lack the opportunities to develop them. As an outreach worker it's my job to liaise with other workers in our area to identify who these young people are and open the doors to Fairbridge.

Describe a typical day. I offer young people a combination of challenging group activities and one-to-one support in a safe environment, where they can develop the self-belief and skills they will need to take a greater control of their lives.

What other agencies, and who else within your organisation, do you work with? Often I work in partnership with young people's referral agents - they could be either education welfare officers or youth mentoring workers.

What qualifications do you need? I am the first person they meet, so the most important things I need are an ability to relate to young people, the time to listen to them and a determination never to give up. A youth work qualification helps but it is no substitute for the right personal qualities.
