Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Bob Elliot, duty social work co-ordinator, Southampton Foster Care Services

1 min read
What exactly do you do? I co-ordinate the frontline duty role at Foster Care Services. We take referrals from social workers, identify placements for children and young people and offer advice and support to carers who ring us.

Describe a typical day. Every day is different. The phone never stops, enquiries are varied and it is important to ensure that the co-ordination of placements goes as smoothly as possible. Placement requests vary from emergency and daycare through to long-term caring and respite care.

What other agencies, and who else within your organisation, do you work with? We work with parents, schools, health providers, external fostering organisations, and many more. It is essential that we work with area social work teams as closely as possible.

How did you end up doing this job? I joined the team in 1999 as a supervising social worker. The frontline duty system needed redeveloping and I helped that to happen, then became co-ordinator.
