Workforce Reform: Policy changes to threaten pensions

Unison is threatening to ballot members on taking strike action unless current pension holders keep their existing retirement age and benefits.

NHS workers, civil servants and teachers secured this promise when their pension was renegotiated last month.

Unison said fully qualified youth workers would have been part of the teachers' pension scheme, but many have transferred to the LGPS.

Among the changes proposed by the Local Government Association (LGA) is the abolition of the "85 year rule", allowing workers to retire when their age and years of service add up to 85. It would be replaced with a standard retirement age of 65.
