YOUTH SERVICE: Ballot expected to favour strike action

Doug Nicholls, general secretary at the union, said membership support for strike action was "strong".

Six other unions "expressed their solidarity" for the CYWU at its special pay conference and rally on 24 January, including the National Union of Teachers and Unison.

Nicholls said that part-time workers at the conference revealed that young people were in some cases earning more than them. One delegate said they were paid only 53p more an hour than they were 20 years ago, despite now having more responsibility.

"The view is that there is too much done by too few and for too little," said Nicholls.
