YOUTH SERVICE: Union votes in favour of strike ballot after failure to agree deal

1 min read

Youth worker representatives from every local authority in England, Wales and Northern Ireland unanimously voted in favour of a ballot at a Community and Youth Workers' Union conference in Birmingham last weekend. The union has figures that it says reveal a 13m shortfall in planned spending on youth services.

The Government allocated 513m to English youth and community services in its Transforming Youth Work document. The union has analysed Ofsted, National Youth Agency and its own figures and says authorities are planning to spend 344m, plus funds legitimately spent elsewhere.

Government sources assume an average of 30 per cent of that 513m is legitimately spent elsewhere, which leaves a shortfall of 13m. The union says this money would cover a 20 per cent increase in pay for JNC-qualified youth workers in England.
