Marcia Twelftree has been appointed to the board of the School Food Trust. Twelftree, who has been headteacher of Charters School in Berkshire for 10 years, will sit on the board for two years, effective from 1 March.

The School Food Trust was set up in 2005 to improve the health of schoolchildren. Twelftree is also a member of the Department for Children, Schools and Families' 2012 Education Plan Advisory Group.

Lancashire County Council has appointed Helen Denton as executive director for children and young people. Denton is currently operations director for service company Serco's education and children's services group and is responsible for contracts in Walsall, Stoke-on-Trent and Bradford. She takes up her post on 1 August 2008, following Pat Jefferson's retirement.

Professor Carolyn Hamilton, director of the Children's Legal Centre, has been appointed as a commissioner on the Legal Services Commission. Hamilton will advise on child and family justice matters. She is also senior legal adviser to 11 Million, a member of the Family Justice Council and a law chair at the University of Essex.
