SENCO
Where you might hear it: In any school or college.
What does it mean: Senco stands for special educational needs co-ordinator. Sometimes one teacher acts as Senco for an entire school, but large schools are likely to have a Senco team. Sencos are responsible for ensuring schools are inclusive. They offer assistance to children with obvious learning difficulties, but also to those who might learn at a slower pace because of emotional problems. Sencos have to identify effective teaching and study approaches, set targets for raising achievement, and consult with each of their student's parents.
How to use it: Join an online Senco forum and share good practice with fellow education professionals. Keep up to date with special educational needs policy by signing up to a training course for Sencos.
