CBT

Where you might hear it: From anyone working in mental health

What does it mean: CBT stands for cognitive behavioural therapy. It is a short-term treatment consisting of a number of therapies where the client and therapist talk through the individual's problems and think of ways of overcoming them. These problems can range from relationship issues and sleep disorders to eating disorders. CBT changes people's attitudes and their behaviour through therapies that focus on the thoughts, images, beliefs and attitudes young people hold and how they relate to their behaviour. Treatment usually lasts about six months.

How to use it: It is possible to get CBT on the NHS in some areas, but provision is patchy. A GP may be able to give information about local services, although waiting lists can be long. There are not many private practitioners, although some private hospitals employ CBT therapists.
