What does it mean: A polyclinic is a large community medical centre providing a wide range of services including GPs, community services, most outpatient services, minor procedures, urgent care, diagnostics such as pathology tests and X-rays, healthy living classes, antenatal and postnatal care by midwives, community mental health care, opticians and dentists. Polyclinics, which are only a policy idea at the moment, could be co-located at a hospital or based in the community. Health minister Lord Ara Darzi's review of healthcare in London suggests using polyclinics to provide health services for patients in the capital.
