Work Wise: Jargon buster

Have you sat through an entire meeting and wondered what your colleagues are rambling on about? Use our handy jargon guide to find out what they mean.

Statement

Where you might hear it: From anyone who works in education or with children who have special educational needs.

What does it mean: The phrase "statement" is short for "statement of special educational needs". When a child needs educational support that their school is unable to provide, the local authority responsible will assess the child's needs and then issue a statement. This will set out the extra support that the local authority is legally required to provide for that child, for example, extra reading lessons.

How to use it: Read the government's recommendations about statements in the Children's Plan. Explore the appeals process for parents who want to challenge their local authority's decision on whether or not their child is entitled to a statement.
