Use our handy jargon guide to find out what your multi-agency partners are really talking about.
Phrase: Compact.
Where you might hear it: From the voluntary sector.
What does it mean? Aside from meaning small and perfectly formed, it also refers to an agreement between voluntary organisations and the government to improve their relationship and hopefully benefit the community as well as themselves. Local compacts are agreements between local voluntary and community sectors, councils and other local public bodies. The compacts include agreements on how the different parties should behave in areas such as funding and consultation.
How to use it: Encourage "a compact way of working" and share your good practice with partners. Insist on "compact compliance" by ensuring both parties are committed to working together.
