Off-label medicines

Where you might hear it: From anyone involved with children and young people's health.

What does it mean: The term off-label medicines refers to drugs that are prescribed for children, despite not being licensed for use in a particular age group or dose. Due to a lack of licensed formulations for children, the Department of Health estimates that over a third of children in the UK have received at least one such medicine. Off-label medicines present a risk management issue for health professionals who have to assess whether a medication is suitable for an individual child, and which dose to prescribe it in.
