A New Way of Handling Parents' Complaints About School Issues

The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has proposed changes to the way complaints by parents about their children's education are handled. The move follows pledges in The Children's Plan to make procedures more straightforward and transparent.

The consultation outlines the principles behind the reforms, which include all complaints being considered at school level in the first instance.

The DCSF wants views on how well current mediation services are working in resolving complaints and whether this is an effective way to deal with bullying. The consultation also proposes two models for creating an independent system for dealing with complaints that are not solved at school level. Other proposals include how to manage complaints against teachers and how best to test the new approaches.
