Member states are responsible for the organisation and content of education and training systems. The role of the European Union is to support them. This could be, for example, through its Lifelong Learning Programme or the Education and Training 2010 Work Programme, which encourages the exchange of information, data and best practice.
The European Commission has launched this consultation to identify aspects of school education on which joint action at EU level could be effective.
Key questions examine how schools can make sure they meet the needs of all pupils, and cover a core curriculum; how schools can make sure they prepare children and young people for life after formal education; and how school communities and leadership can be developed.
