WALES: MPs applaud Welsh children's policies

A Parliamentary committee has praised the Welsh Assembly's moves to empower children and urged the UK Government to adopt similar approaches.

The Welsh Affairs Committee called on the Department for Education and Skills to introduce schools' councils, which enable Welsh children to discuss their concerns with teachers.

In the Empowerment of Children and Young People in Wales report, MPs also asked for the assembly to be given greater powers over youth justice.

They said the Youth Justice Board's aim of locating 90 per cent of young offenders within 50 miles of their home families could not be achieved in Wales and the assembly needed greater powers and resources to reach this target.

The Welsh children's commissioner should have powers over Welsh children residing in English secure accommodation, the committee said.
