Wales: Minister steps in to save Cardiff centre

The Wales Development Agency planned to auction off the industrial unit that housed Butetown Youth Pavilion, but the intervention of Morgan, at the request of Cardiff City Council leader Rodney Berman, stopped the auction going ahead.

The sale would have put the future of Butetown Youth Pavilion, which supports hundreds of young people in the Butetown and Grangetown areas of the Welsh capital, in jeopardy.

Cardiff City Council had been renting the building for 1 a year on a 10-year lease that was due to expire in July 2005. The future of the youth centre is still uncertain, as no agreement has been reached over what happens when the current lease ends.
