The pilot, launched on 6 March by Rhodri Morgan, First Minister, will be running in 10 local authority areas during the Easter break in a partnership between the Welsh Assembly, Welsh Local Government Association and the Sports Council for Wales.
Dr Huw Jones, chief executive of the council, said: "We hope to attract a wide range of young people to take part in the scheme, which will help improve their overall health."
The Welsh Assembly has set aside 2.5m to reimburse local councils for admission costs.
Pilots are in Caerphilly, Cardiff, Conwy, Gwynedd, Newport, Swansea, Torfaen, Vale of Glamorgan, Wrexham and Ynys Mon.
