Unison prepares to fight closures of nurseries at universities and colleges

Trade union Unison is launching a national campaign to halt the closure of nurseries attached to universities and colleges.

At least 13 institutions plan to close their nurseries, according toreports received by Unison, the National Union of Students and theUniversity and College Union.

Unison is preparing a campaign pack to help staff and students fightclosures. It was due to launch in September, but officials have alreadysent draft copies to nurseries who fear they will be shut over thesummer.

Denise Bertuchi, Unison national officer, said: "The closures do not fiteasily with the government's objectives to reduce the number of youngpeople not in education or employment."

One 110-place nursery that has already lost the fight caters for theNorthenden campus of Manchester College. Based in South Manchester, itsits in the ward with the fourth highest teenage pregnancy rate inEurope, but is due to close on 31 July. Sittu Ahmed, Unison steward forManchester College, said that the closure of the nursery would hinderthe college's attempt to attract young women on to vocationalcourses.
