Unions losing battle to save university nurseries

Nurseries located in universities and colleges are closing at an alarming rate, with 13 shutting their doors in the last year and six more under threat, unions have warned.

The figures from Unison, seen exclusively by CYP Now, show the battle to save nurseries in higher education buildings is struggling despite a continuing national campaign with the National Union of Students and the University and College Union.

Denise Bertuchi, Unison national officer, said nurseries are seen as an easy target for universities and colleges looking to make savings. "Most of these closures appear to be taking place with minimum consultation and without equality impact assessments," she said. "The effect on students is clear and as the overwhelming majority of staff being made redundant are low-paid women there are additional gender issues."
