Councils fail to support nurseries

1 min read Early Years
Local authorities are not supporting nurseries to meet the changing needs of parents during the economic downturn, according to a survey of nursery managers.

Childcare providers surveyed said they received no support from their local authority on sustainability.

The National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) spoke to 30 nurseries across the country, and 89 per cent said they had received no support from their authority in relation to sustainability.

The research also revealed that the credit crunch is having a varying effect on nurseries. Just over half - 53 per cent - said there had been a noticeable difference in patterns of childcare use.

While one in 10 per cent reported that occupancy levels had dropped by 11 per cent or more, seven per cent said levels had risen by six to 10 per cent.
