Council-run nurseries in 'chaos' over funding formula changes

1 min read Early Years
The government's new funding model for early years is creating "chaos and confusion" among council-run nurseries, according to a survey.

The study by charity Early Education suggests three out of four nursery schools and children's centres are yet to be told how the Early Years Single Funding Formula will affect their funds, despite the fact that it is due to be introduced by all local authorities next April.

"Our survey has revealed a picture of chaos and confusion," said Megan Pacey, Early Education's chief executive. "Local authorities in the majority of areas are struggling to set formulae that ensure the sustainability of many effective high-quality maintained nursery schools and classes," she added.

The new formula is intended to make government funding for free childcare places fairer.
