Childcare: Parents battle to save nurseries

Parents in Huddersfield are battling to save three nurseries as the local authority launches two separate reviews into the issue.

Kirklees Council voted to close the three nurseries, all located in adeprived area of Huddersfield, back in February but provoked a storm ofprotest from parents.

Following a high-profile campaign against the decision, councillor JimDodds, cabinet member for children's services, agreed to hold a review. The council's scrutiny committee is now also investigating the way theissue has been handled.

Councillors say money saved by closing the three nurseries will be usedto fund new children's centres and private nurseries in the area.

But parent Owen Whitehead, whose son Christian attends one of thenurseries in question, said: "The new children's centres are not beingset up in the areas that need them most and none of them offersdaycare."
