The survey, which exposes the true extent of the crisis in further education, found that hundreds of jobs are under threat in some colleges. Lecturers, cleaners and nursery staff are among the staff likely to be laid off.
The survey also found that 76 per cent of colleges plan to cut back on courses. Almost a quarter of colleges that have nurseries believe these facilities are under threat.
Dave Prentis, Unison's general secretary, said college staff around the country are facing an uncertain future. "Staff and students will be hit if courses are cut and nurseries close," he warned.
"Job cuts will also lead to lost skills and professionalism. This will have a huge impact on all those who have already lost their jobs during the recession and are trying to re-skill and this will have a knock-on effect on the opportunities available for the ‘lost generation' of young people, who are among those hit the hardest."
