Funding for projects aimed at helping to tackle poverty and social deprivation

What is it? J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, set up the Volant Charitable Trust to support a range of causes. Its main aim is to help charities striving to alleviate poverty and social deprivation, with a particular emphasis on children’s and women’s issues. The fund also provides money for research into the causes, treatment and possible cures of Multiple Sclerosis, as well as a number of international causes.

How much is on offer? There is no stated minimum or maximum grant size. In the past, the trust tended to give large grants of more than £100,000 to national charities, but its emphasis is now shifting to the support of smaller organisations.
