The strange noises we all heard a little while back turned out to be an audible shudder from the youth work profession as Margaret Hodge quoted unpublished "research" slamming apparently aimless youth centre provision in the 1980s as potentially "bad" for those young people involved (the official NYA response can be found on our web site).
As someone working in youth centres at that time, I'm afraid I have to admit that in some ways I know what she's getting at. While a good case can - and should - be made in favour of the "negotiated, young person-centred" provision offering "informed choices" to young people, it clearly butters no beans for a Government big on targets and focused on outcomes.
