The National Youth Agency: What's changed

1 min read
What's Changed is a tool for groups to record the outcomes of participation by young people. Every other week we summarise an example of how young people have brought about change.

Organisation: Doxford Youth Project Issue Lack of provision for young people in the community

THE SITUATION

Complaining to their detached youth workers that there were no facilities for them in the area, young people said they wanted to develop a youth club. With youth worker support young people made a video to highlight the issue and gain the support of the local community. They used the film to show how they often hung around the train station and raised the issue of safety. Following a public screening of Boredism, nine community members volunteered to help run a youth club and the Miners Welfare Hall was offered as a venue for six months rent free.

WHAT CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE SAID

"It's mint that the adults are actually listening to us and we are getting to help design things that we will use. Makes sense though!"

WHAT'S CHANGED?

Young people now have a youth club in the village, and following a successful funding bid a multi-use games area is currently under construction.

"It's great now instead of us having to go to other places to meet our friends, now they are coming here."
