The National Youth Agency: What's changed

Organisation: Aldbourne Youth Council

Issue: The need for facilities - BMX jumps

The situation

Young people had created dirt jumps for their BMX bikes on disused land at the edge of the village. Being parish council land, there was an unresolved issue of insurance, which led to the jumps being demolished.

As a result young people formed an action group and researched existing BMX tracks and insurance arrangements in order to propose solutions to the council. The parish council agreed the plans and loaned them the build money while they continued to fundraise.

What children and young people said

"We did thorough research into BMX jumps that met insurance criteria, found a qualified track builder and raised funds to build the track on a piece of vacant village land."
