Organisation: Weston Town Council Barcode: Young People's Cafe Issue: Somewhere to go - youth cafe
The situation
Young people came to the youth council asking them to find somewhere for youngsters to go in the town. Questionnaires were sent out in the quarterly newsletter to see what young people wanted to do. Ideas for a youth cafe were taken to the town council who, despite early concerns from some councillors, gave their agreement.
What children and young people said
"There had been talk of a cafe in 2001. In 2005 we put a real effort into making it work and a lot of time persuading the adult council. Getting it set up took a lot of work by the adults. The young people were more involved in speaking about it" (Hannah, 17).
