The National Youth Agency: Quality - East meets West - exploring young people's 'double identity'

1 min read
The National Youth Agency has established the Young Researcher Network (YRN), a partnership with 15 youth organisations to value, support and encourage research led by young people.

With the training phase complete, the 15 groups will research a range of different issues. In the latest of our series of profiles, we take a look at a project overseen by Barnardo's Kirklees Khandaani Dhek Bhal service, which examines why some South Asian young people feel they need to assume a "double identity" and how other cultural and religious issues affect them.

Accessing mainstream services can be a challenge for South Asian young people because services do not always meet their particular needs. The West Yorkshire-based Barnardo's group has decided to examine this area in more detail to gain the views of their peers in Kirklees and further insight into the realities of having to balance life in a Western culture with an often more traditional family life. The research aims to raise awareness in schools and services and among professionals on why many South Asian young people feel they have to assume a double identity.
