The National Youth Agency: Project investigates media representations

1 min read
The National Youth Agency has established the Young Researcher Network, a partnership with 15 youth organisations to value, support and encourage research led by young people.

With the training phase complete, the 15 groups will research a range of different issues. In the latest of our series of project profiles we take a look at a UK Youth Voice research project into the misrepresentation of young people in the media.

Given the amount of stereotyping - most of it negative - that seems to revolve around young people, this project aims to find out how young people feel they are being misrepresented in the media and to arrive at ways in which young people could gain more positive media coverage.

The research will be overseen by UK Youth Voice, a panel of young people aged 16 to 25. A questionnaire will be designed and distributed among other young people of that age group through various means, the aim being to receive 1,000 responses. This will be followed by face to face discussions at a workshop during the UK Youth Voice annual conference. The questionnaire will be designed to include both quantitative information (from which statistics can be gleaned) and qualitative information to establish recurring themes and talking points.
