With the training phase complete, the 15 groups will research a range of different issues. In the latest of our series of project profiles we take a look at a UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) research project that aims to shed light on four decades of young people's experiences within Gypsy and Traveller communities.
Four groups of Gypsies and Travellers from across England are engaging with UKYP, examining the biggest problems young people face in such communities, the things they enjoy most about their lifestyle, and assessing ways in which their communities can be positively portrayed in modern times. Since the 1970s and the replacement of traditional horse and wagons with trailers and car-driven caravans, there has been little record of community history, with Gypsy and Traveller groups often being negatively portrayed by the media. This project aims to provide a record of recent history and human experience.
