The National Youth Agency: Encouraging a spirit of adventure

1 min read

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme held its General Council last week in Liverpool. The National Youth Agency led several workshops on youth participation as part of the three-day conference - which included three keynote Royal inputs and an impressive selection of speakers, ranging from award trustees such as Howard Williamson and Sir Tom Farmer to Mike Tomlinson, the chairman of the 14 to 19 reform working group, and young people themselves, with proceedings overseen by ITV news presenter Mary Nightingale.

The award's Annual Review 2004 is an impressive read - about 138,000 young people entered for an award over the past year, an increase in participation of five per cent over the previous 12 months. Some 54,000 participants gained their full awards, which was a similar increase to the previous year, and many more made great progress in achieving sectional certificates.
