But shortly after he announced he was leaving Young Enterprise, he was approached by a firm of head-hunters acting on behalf of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. One thing led to another and now he finds himself in an office in Windsor, three weeks into running one of the largest youth organisations in the UK.

"The final thing that persuaded me was the Earl of Wessex," he says.

"He is a real enthusiast. The Duke of Edinburgh, it goes without saying, is steeped in the whole organisation, but the Earl of Wessex just understands the organisation so well, and is so committed to it."
