The National Framework of Awards in Non-Formal Educational Settings maps the full range of awards, from Asdan to Youthtrain, including the joint NYA and NIACE Young Adult Learners Partnership's "Getting Connected" scheme and other well known schemes such as The Duke of Edinburgh's Award and the Youth Achievement Award.
Criteria for inclusion stated that schemes needed to be widely available across the country and not just in a few locations, be delivered in non-formal educational settings, be based on a clear, consistent curriculum, involve young people in a programme lasting weeks or months, have an established track record of delivery and include clear means of assessing achievements. The book offers policymakers, practitioners and young people a credible comparison of formal and informal awards, allowing young people to see the value of the informal education they are engaged in against the backdrop of more traditional qualifications.
