As a parent of young children I learnt anew how devastating those words can be to a youngster who is simply having a good time, albeit usually too loudly and in the wrong place. I had to develop a more negotiated approach to agreeing mutually agreeable behaviour. It was Alan Tuckett, the current chief executive of NIACE, who helped me rethink this concept. He said that we needed to recapture and reframe "showing off". In the youth sector we don't do enough loud and energetic celebration of what is good and interesting. Alan said we should make a lot of noise and be proud of ourselves. Too right.
