The Consultation on Standards in Independent Schools

Education
The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) is proposing changes to the regulations that govern standards in independent schools.

These schools can only operate if they are registered with the DCSF, and the standards they must satisfy are set out in the Education Act 2002. They include moral and social development, safety of pupils and quality of education.

Proposed amendments include making it a statutory requirement for academies to have a behaviour policy. This is currently the case in practice and it is not yet a requirement through the regulations. The proposals also include compliance of a government-accepted recommendation to reduce the administrative burden on businesses. As a result, independent schools will no longer need to provide parents with copies of reports and procedures. These can be posted on the school's website instead. If standards are not met, it may result in the school being removed from the register.
