- Is it acceptable even to mention deregulation these days?

I suppose it depends whether or not you're talking about financial, or other, services. Better (meaning less) regulation of independent schools, for example, still seems to be acceptable and is in fact the subject of a current consultation on a set of - um - regulations.

About half of independent schools are inspected by Ofsted but the others are inspected by approved inspection bodies: the Independent Schools Inspectorate, the School Inspection Service, and the Bridge School Inspectorate. Under the Education Act 2002, independent schools must be registered with the Department for Children, Schools and Families and have to satisfy standards set out in regulations. It's these regulations that are being updated.
