ENGLAND
In England, 33 per cent of maintained schools have a religious character. About 68 per cent of maintained faith schools are Church of England, with 30 per cent Roman Catholic. The first minority faith schools to open in the state sector were Jewish. In May 1997, the first Muslim and Sikh state schools opened. The government last autumn pledged its support for more state Muslim schools. Faith schools can do things differently in terms of staffing, admissions, teaching religious education and collective worship. Faith academies must follow the statutory admissions code and new academies from July 2007 must follow the national curriculum in English, maths, science and ICT.
