57 children out of 10,000 are looked after (55 in England)

- 53% of looked-after children are in that position as the result of care orders (65 per cent in England)

- 91% of looked-after children are in foster care (75 per cent in England)

- 40% of care leavers with the opportunity of sitting exams achieve at least one GCSE at grade A*-G (47 per cent in England)

The Isle of Wight, a unitary authority off the south coast of England, has one of the best records in the country for keeping children out of care homes. It is one of only four authorities in England - the others being Hartlepool, North Lincolnshire and Poole - which has foster placements for every single child under 10 years old in its care. For those over 10, the number in care homes is negligible.
