Social Care News: Fostering - Scottish carers set to get more control

Scottish foster children are set to be able to stay overnight with friends without the friends' parents having to undergo police checks, under new proposals by the Scottish Executive.

The Executive is backing a number of recommendations by the Adoption Policy Review Group, including putting any decisions regarding police checks in the hands of foster carers and introducing a national minimum carer's allowance. The Scottish government will also give foster carers more rights and responsibilities under the new proposed Permanence Order.

At the moment, if a child wants to stay at a friend's house for the night, the friend's family has to undergo a police check.
