A major joint report by the Fostering Network and BAAF Adoption & Fostering calls on UK governments to make a significant additional and ongoing investment to give children in foster care the same opportunities as other children.
"We have done very detailed calculations and we are convinced the figure is robust and sound. In fact, there are probably areas where we have underestimated the costs," said Robert Tapsfield, chief executive of the Fostering Network.
The figure is based on a number of assumptions about what is needed for high standards of care. These include all foster carers receiving the Fostering Network's minimum allowance and all foster carers who make themselves available for 52 weeks per year being paid a fee throughout the year.
