Social Care News: Fostering services - Leeds overhauls service after criticism

One of the largest fostering services in the country is to introduce a new payment and support system for foster carers after criticism from a local government watchdog.

A report issued by the local government ombudsman Patricia Thomasearlier this month ordered Leeds City Council to review its fosteringservices.

"That review is now complete," said Eric Shedlow, who is responsible forfostering and adoption services at Leeds City Council. "The ombudsmansaid we needed to look at our system and develop a model that was easyto understand."

The ombudsman investigated Leeds after complaints about its socialservices for children. The council has accepted the ombudsman's findingsand agreed to pay 57,000 compensation to a family for fosterplacement failures.

After taking advice from experts, including BAAF Adoption & Fostering,the council has decided to introduce a new model that will give fostercarers who want to develop their skills clear career pathways.
