Northumberland County Council's New Start scheme aims to turn around thelives of young people who have been living in care by providing themwith an individually tailored treatment programme.
The scheme, funded by a Choice Protects grant, will offer intensivesupport to the foster carers and the child. Support will be provided viasocial workers, therapists and youth workers and a point system willreward good behaviour.
Anne Fimister, fostering team manager at the council, said: "We're shortof foster carers like everywhere else and we want an in-house resourceto help children with high support needs, rather than sending them outof the county."
She said the council was looking to recruit five foster families wholive in the county's rural and urban areas. Extensive training would beprovided.
