Scotland: Blueprint could transform foster care

1 min read
Foster care in Scotland could take on a more preventative role under Scottish Executive proposals.

The executive's National Fostering and Kinship Care Strategy, published last week, suggests that over the next 20 years foster carers could become more involved in helping children and parents remain together in their parental home.

Other suggestions in the strategy include introducing a maximum number of placements for looked-after children and allowing children to stay in care homes after they turn 18 when appropriate. Grants to help foster carers make one-off purchases such as a car are also being considered.

Bryan Ritchie, director of the Fostering Network Scotland, said: "This [strategy] is an important milestone for both foster and kinship care in Scotland."
